Strawberry poison dart frog
Oophaga pumilio
Oophaga pumilio is perhaps the most popular poison dart frog because it has been adopted as a symbol in Costa Rica, where its image is used to make souvenirs for tourists. This species is distributed in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. In the region of Bocas del Toro in the Caribbean coast of Panama, O. pumilio has a striking variation in coloration (yellow, red, orange, white, blue, green, purple, etc.). Each population has a very different color within a very small geographic range and the absence of geographic barriers between most of those populations. As other poison dart frogs, this species exhibits parental care which is implemented by female, who will take care of the eggs and once they hatch, she will transport each tadpole to a different bromeliad and then she will come back to feed them with unfertile eggs.
